This Giving Tuesday, we are launching our ‘Heal Together: Mental Wellness for Black Communities’ campaign to raise £10,000 to provide culturally-relevant therapy for Black individuals facing mental health challenges. Every donation will directly support access to healing:
- If we raise £60, it could sponsor one therapy session
- If we raise £360, it could sponsors six sessions, providing life-changing support.
- Collectively, this campaign could fund up to 30 culturally-relevant therapy sessions, helping to restore dignity, hope, and humanity to those most affected by systemic inequities.
Systemic racism and discrimination continue to have profound impacts on the mental health of Black individuals in the UK. Research shows that:
- Black women are more likely to report feeling re-traumatized by interactions with public services, including mental health and policing. Between April and June 2017, 457 incidents of sexual assault in mental health settings were reported, disproportionately affecting Black women.
- 23% of Black adults report experiencing common mental health disorders in a given week, compared to 17% of White British adults.
- Black men are less likely to access mental health services through early intervention or community care and are more likely to encounter services via the criminal justice system or crisis settings, highlighting systemic barriers to culturally sensitive preventative care.
- A staggering 65% of Black individuals in the UK report experiencing prejudice from healthcare professionals, with rates rising to 75% among younger adults aged 18-34.
- Despite higher prevalence, Black adults have the lowest treatment rate of any ethnic group, at just 6% compared to 13% among White British individuals.
Kehinde Adeogun, BEO's Director of Legal Services and Policy, shares:
"Every day, I hear from individuals who not only carry the heavy burden of traumatic pain because of racism and discrimination, but have that burden compounded again and again by the stress of fighting the injustice they have encountered. This fund will enable individuals to seek culturally appropriate mental health support whilst navigating the difficult terrain of bringing a legal challenge. This is not just about addressing mental health needs; it's about restoring dignity, hope and self-worth whilst fighting racism."
